Raising Dementia awareness
through creative means
Since 2013
For over a decade, The Valerie Foundation has used film, art, community and lived experience to transform understanding of dementia.
Founded in 2013 by brothers Lee and Andrew after caring for their mother, Valerie, through 13 years of living with Frontotemporal Dementia.
Our work
Award-winning documentary films, exhibitions, podcasts, carers groups, animal-assisted therapy, community education and touring presentations.
Films
We have made multiple documentary films about our family, our journey and our mother. Some of which have made it into international documentary film festivals.
Presentations
We share our journey, and our lived experiences through talking at conferences, educational institutions, on TV, radio and podcasts and have been guest speakers at international events.
Community
We run a monthly FTD Carers Group dedicated to supporting carers who look after people living with FTD. With our partnership with Heeley City Farm we enhance people's wellbeing with animal assisted therapy.
Art
In 2016 we created All Our Brains, an exhibition that invited carers, supporters, artists, professionals, students, lecturers and people living with dementia to create work exploring the topic of dementia, this became a touring exhibition due to demand
Podcasts
Through our extensive rallying and awareness raising we were invited to be on the first series of the BBC's 'Dementia and Me' podcast. We have also been on the Macintyre's Families Podcast.
Music
As part of our work with the Sheffield Dementia Action Alliance, of which Lee was a founder and steering group member, we organised the Sheffield Dementia Action Alliance stage at Tramlines, a Sheffield based music festival, to raise money for the SDAA.
